In February 2025, the Office of the Prosecutor General (PGR) charged before the Federal Supreme Court 34 of the 37 individuals investigated for having allegedly attempted a coup d’état in Brazil. The PGR concluded that the evidence obtained by the Federal Police indicated the existence of a clear plan to overthrow democracy in the country.
According to the Office of the Prosecutor General, former president Jair Bolsonaro would have led a criminal organization that, among other actions, planned the assassination of the president-elect in 2022 and other authorities, including a Justice of the Federal Supreme Court.
The PGR stated that the coup plan was presented to Bolsonaro on the pretext of alleged electoral fraud in Brazil, and that he approved it despite an official Ministry of Defense report finding no evidence of irregularities in the electoral process.
The indictment also underscored what is portrayed as the increasingly hostile stance Bolsonaro adopted from 2021 onward, marked by persistent attacks on the collective decisions of the higher courts and on Brazil’s electoral system — internationally recognized as secure and reliable.
